Truck drivers navigate a challenging course.

INDIANAPOLIS — The National Truck Driving Championships, often called the “Super Bowl of Safety,” are renowned for their vehicle challenges. On the second day of the competition, participants arrived early at the Indiana Convention Center to navigate a complex course designed to test their skills.

Rubber duckies were placed strategically on the course, and drivers had to avoid them while maneuvering. Hundreds of drivers showcased their precision-driving skills and ability to handle commercial vehicles under pressure as the search for the tournament’s best continues.

Two rookie drivers expressed their excitement after completing the course. “My heart is beating fast; the excitement is overwhelming,” said Salena Ashbreck of FedEx, South Carolina. “I didn’t realize how big this event is.” Matt Gurley from Oklahoma, also with FedEx, added, “There are a few challenging obstacles. It’s a unique experience to do this indoors.”

Maine’s Austin Vanavery of CN Brown Co., competing in his first nationals, shared, “It’s great seeing everyone work together and encourage each other. That’s what it’s all about.”

James Dixon of A. Duie Pyle, representing Team Connecticut, competed in the sleeper berth class on his second appearance at the nationals. “I’m excited to be back here,” he said. “It’s such an awesome event.”

Drivers continue to tackle the course at the 87th annual National Truck Driving Championships and National Step Van Driving Championships on Aug. 23. The top five from the course, pre-trip inspection, and regulation exam will advance to the final round on Aug. 24. The top three scorers across nine vehicle classes will receive trophies, and the grand champion will earn a blue ribbon.
